Photosynthesis: in photoautotrophic organisms, the synthesis of carbohydrate in chloroplasts from carbon dioxide as a carbon source and water as a hydrogen donor with the release of oxygen as a waste product, using light energy trapped by the pigments, to drive the synthesis of ATP (the light reaction). This is subsequently used as an energy source in carbohydrate synthesis (the dark reaction).
