Description:
Urosome segments fused; without a lateral ridge, uropods inserted laterally. Head with a short rostrum in female, in male the rostrum may be very long. Antenna 1 and 2 moderately setose; female antenna 1 peduncle article 1 ventral margin with 3 or 4 long spines, inner margin with 2 or 3 proximal spines, without a proximal process. Male antenna 1 peduncle article 1 ventral margin with one distal spine, inner margin with a single proximal process but without spines. Female antenna 2 peduncle article 4 distal ventrolateral angle not produced, inner ventral surface with two paired and one solitary spine, article 5 inner distal margin not produced, ventral margin with one or 2 long spines, without proximal process. Male antenna 2 peduncle article 4 distal ventrolateral angle with one large acute process and 1 or 2 smaller processes, inner ventral surface without spines, article 5 inner distal margin produced, ventral margin without spines. Gnathopod 1 palm transverse, evenly convex. Uropod 1 peduncle outer margin with 8 to 11 spines, inner margin with one distal spine; uropod 2 peduncle dorsal surface with 2 to 6 setae, inner margin with one distal spine.

Habitat:
Shallow subtidal or low intertidal; constructs tubes of mud and detritus on weeds and hydroid, usually in brackish waters, such as brackish lagoons, ditches and rivers.
Distribution:
North Atlantic, widespread, American and European coasts. European coasts from southern Baltic to eastern Mediterranean; also Pacific coast of North and South America; Japan.
