Description:
Body length of female up to 3 mm, of male up to 1.3 mm. Body elongated, with the male being much smaller than the female. Antenna 1 of female four-articled, that of male with a two-articled peduncle and a five-articled flagellum of which the three central articles bear many aesthetascs. Antenna 2 six-articled.
In the female the claw of the chelipedal propodus is two-toothed and in the male it is usually so although it may be simple. The upper margin of the dactylus is crenulated.
Pleopods well developed with exceptionally long setae in the male.
Exopodite of uropod two-articled, endopodite two-articled in female and three-articied in male. The demarcation of the uropod articles is often indistinct.
Habitat:
This is a common species from 5-240 m offshore where it may be found in fine and coarse sands, and sometimes in sandy mud.
Distribution:
This species is found off the coasts of Italy, northern France, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, east and west Scotland, east and south-west England, western Ireland, Isle of Man and the Shetland Islands.
