Synchelidium haplocheles

(Grube, 1864)

Description:
Body generally very similar to Synchelidium tenuimanum and Synchelidium maculatum.
Head, rostrum short and downturned reaching to about mid-point of peduncle article 1 of antenna 1; eyes very large, rounded. Female antenna 1 peduncle articles 1 and 2 subequal length, flagellum short, only about 5-articulate. Male antenna 1 peduncle articles 2-3 subequal and much shorter than 1, flagellum equal to length of peduncle, setose, article 1 longer than 2-3 combined. Female antenna 2 equal to length of 1. peduncle articles 4 5 subequal, flagellum about 7-articulate. Male antenna 2 flagellum very long and slender. Gnathopod 1 carpal lobe elongate with stout apical spine. propodus oval, palm convex with about 6 rounded marginal teeth and several smaller intermediate teeth, distal margin smooth. Gnathopod 2 propodus rather robust proximally, carpal lobe reaching just beyond end of propodal process, inner margin of propodal process crenulate distally and finely toothed proximally. Pereopods 3-4 dactylus minute. Pereopods 5-6 dactylus well developed. Pereopod 7 very long, spinose. Uropods slender. rami minutely toothed. Telson with apex weakly emarginate.

Size:
Up to 5 mm.

Colour:
Whitish, banded or speckled with brown.

Habitat:
Depth range from 5 to 100 metres, usually found on sandy or muddy sediments.

Distribution:
North East Atlantic; North Sea; widely distributed around European coast from Norway to Mediterranean.
