Genus Ampelisca

Coxal plate 1 broad distally concealing base of antenna 2, plates 1 to 4 distal margins with 1 or 2 rows of long setae, plate 4 large with posterior margin deeply emarginate. Head elongate, usually narrowly truncated anteriorly; usually 2 pairs of distinct corneal lenses, occasionally absent. Mandibular palp arising from large process. Gnathopods 1 and 2 elongate, setose, feebly subchelate, dactylus with inner margin setulose. Pereiopods 3 and 4 merus long and broad, fringed with long plumose setae; pereiopod 4 larger and more densely setose than 3; pereiopod 4 ischium with posterior margin setose. Pereiopods 5 and 6 basis broad, carpus and propodus strongly spinose, dactylus very small. Pereiopod 7 basis very large with posterior lobe obliquely expanded, distal margin only with plumose setae, propodus foliaceous, dactylus lanceolate. Uropods 1 and 2 spinose, outer ramus of uropod 1 often naked; uropod 3 large, rami foliaceous and more or less setose. Telson elongate and deeply cleft.
