Galathea strigosa

(Linnaeus)

Description:
Large animal, overall body length about 90 mm, carapace up to 53 mm; vivid red with patches and bands of bright blue. Rostrum with a long apical spine and covered with fringed scales; three epigastric spines on each side, middle one longest; carapace grooves densely pilose. Merus of maxilliped 3 with two strong spines (G. strigosa detail).

Habitat:
From shallow sublittoral to 600 metres, on gravely and rocky bottoms.

Distribution:
From North Cape, Scandinavia to Spain, Canaries, Mediterranean and Red Sea.
