Description:
Body robust, in male urosome segment 1 a with setose lobe on the dorsal margin and the posterior segments weakly keeled. Epimeral plate 3 posterodistal angle quadrate or with a minute tooth. Head with a single pair of corneal lenses. Antenna 1 half the body length, peduncle article 2 much longer and more slender than article 1, flagellum about 25-articulate, in female only with long setae; female antenna 2 equal in length to antenna 1, flagellum setose; male antenna 2 longer than the body, flagellum filiform. Gnathopods 1 and 2 slender, setose, weakly subchelate, propodus oval and much shorter than the carpus. Pereiopods 3 and 4 merus elongate, fringed with plumose setae, dactylus equal to length of the propodus. Pereiopods 5 and 6 carpus robust with several rows of short spines, dactylus very small. Basis of pereiopod 7 narrow with the posterior margin concave, distal angle narrowly rounded; ischium, merus and carpus flattened and spinose, propodus and dactylus very small. Uropod 3 with plumose setae, inner ramus with 3 or 4 large spines on the inner margin. Telson broadly rounded, cleft to about three-quarters length, each lobe with only a few short apical setules.

Size:
Up to about 15 mm, occasionally over 20 mm.

Colour:
Whitish.

Habitat:
Depth range from 10 to 1200 metres.

Distribution:
Arctic Ocean, circumpolar; North Pacific, North Atlantic; very widespread. Atlantic coast of Europe from Norway to Mediterranean, Adriatic.
