Argissa hamatipes

(Norman, 1869)

Description:
Urosome segments smooth in female, in male segment 2 with a prominent backwardly directed process, segment 3 with a small keel. Coxal plate 1 broad and rounded, plates 2 and 3 small, tapering distally, plate 4 very large especially in female. Head with a small rostrum, eyes comprising 4 paired visual elements. Epistome laminar, rounded. Antenna 1 reaching about to end of peduncle article 4 of antenna 2, flagellum about 7-articulate in female and equal to length of peduncle, in male much longer with article 1 elongate, setose; accessory flagellum small, 2-articulate. Antenna 2 elongate, slender, flagellum about 7-articulate. Gnathopods 1 and 2 simple, slender, setose, carpus longer than propodus, dactylus small. Pereiopods 3 and 4 small. Pereiopods 5 and 6 robust, sparsely setose, basis broad, dactylus minute. Pereiopod 7 basis extremely expansive, posterodistal angle prolonged and rounded, merus and carpus broadly flattened, margins with plumose setae, propodus very small, dactylus minute. Uropod 3 rami foliaceous, inner margins with plumose setae in male, in female only few simple setae; apex of rami spiniform. Telson triangular, cleft almost to base.

Size:
Up to about 6 mm.

Colour:
Whitish with an orange tinge on the antennae and pereiopods.

Habitat:
Depth range from 10 to 200 metres, on soft sediments; but also collected below 1000 metres.

Distribution:
North Atlantic, American and European coasts; Arctic Ocean; North Sea. European coast from north Norway to English Channel.
