Apherusa cirrus

Description:
Posterior margin of pleosome segments 1 and 2 with a prominent rounded dorsal tooth. Posterior margin of epimeral plates 2 and 3 smooth, broadly convex, distal angle with a small tooth. Head with only a small rostrum, lateral lobes obliquely truncated; eyes small, rounded. Antenna 1 about half body length, flagellum slender, up to about 30-articulate. Antenna 2 only slightly longer than 1, peduncle article 5 slightly longer than 4 or about equal, flagellum slender, up to about 30-articulate. Gnathopods slender; gnathopod 1 propodus slightly longer than carpus, palm oblique delimited by 2 or 3 slender spines. Gnathopod 2 similar to I, carpus little shorter than propodus. Pereiopods 5 and 7 moderately robust, basis broad with posterior margin smooth or occasionally weakly crenulate. Uropod 3 rami spinose, with few short setae, confronted margins minutely toothed. Telson triangular, margins weakly concave, apex rounded.

Size:
Up to about 8 mm.

Colour:
Deep red.

Habitat:
Intertidal and in the shallow subtidal; amongst algae.

Distribution:
North East Atlantic; European coasts from northern Norway and Spitsbergen to north west France.
