Description:
Body broadly arched and weakly laterally flattened. Head with acute lateral lobes; eyes small and poorly defined, white, often indistinct in large specimens. Antenna 1 peduncle robust and densely setose, flagellum about 9-articulate; accessory flagellum 5-articulate. Antenna 2 peduncle articles 4 and 5 broad, posterior margins fringed with long plumose setae, flagellum about 10-articulate. Gnathopod 1 simple, densely setose, carpus much larger than propodus, dactylus small. Gnathopod 2 also densely setose, generally similar to 1 except propodus minutely chelate. Pereiopods 3 and 4 small, articles broad and setose, dactylus absent. Pereiopods 5 to 7 powerfully developed, strongly spinose, and with numerous long plumose setae, dactylus absent. Uropods robust. Telson broader than long, partly cleft.

Up to 13 mm.
Colour:
Pale yellow or white.
Habitat:
Intertidal, up to the high water mark; burrows in sand and is usually more numerous in wet sands at lower levels on the shore.
Distribution:
North Atlantic, American and European coasts; North Sea. European coasts from Norway and southern Baltic to the Atlantic coast of France.
