Odius carinatus

Description:
Body short, robust, and laterally flattened; pereion and pleosome segments all with a distinct dorsal keel; pleon segment 2 with the keel broadly rounded; segment 3 with the keel subacute. Coxal plate 1 tapering distally; plates 2 and 3 only weakly tapering; plate 4 with the distal angle acute. Head with a long straight rostrum reaching well beyond the peduncle article 1 of antenna 1, lateral lobes prominent, angular; eyes moderately large, oval to kidney-shaped. Antenna 1 and 2 very small; antenna 1 flagellum short and tapering, setose, up to about 7-articulate; antenna 2 equal in length to antenna 1, flagellum extremely small, only as long as the peduncle article 5. Gnathopod 1 very slender, propodus shorter than the carpus and curved, minutely chelate with a few plumose setae, dactylus prolonged distally. Gnathopod 2 moderately robust, merus and carpus with the posterodistal angle produced, spinose, propodus triangular, palm almost straight, minutely spinose, transverse. Pereiopods robust, merus reaching to the distal end of the carpus, dactylus robust; pereiopod 7 basis with the mid-posterior margin angular. Uropod 2 outer ramus shorter than the inner one; uropod 3 outer ramus only about half the length of the inner one. Telson elongate, tapering distally, with a pair of small dorsolateral setules, apex with a small narrow cleft, each lobe rounded.

Size:
Up to about 5 mm.

Colour:
Variable, whitish, occasionally with a brown shading anteriorly.

Habitat:
Depth range from 35 to 200 metres; usually from moderate depths on rocky bottoms amongst algae or hydroids.

Distribution:
Arctic Ocean; North Atlantic, American and European coasts; north and west Norway to the English Channel.
