Paraphoxus oculatus

(Sars, 1879)

Description:
Coxal plate 1 only slightly expanded distally. Epimeral plate 3 prolonged with the distal angle narrowly rounded. Rostral hood with the distal margin broadly rounded; eyes distinct, small and rounded in female, large and kidney-shaped in male. Antenna 1 peduncle article 1 robust, flagellum about 7-articulate; accessory flagellum 4-articulate; in male peduncle article 1 with fine setae on posterior margin, flagellum with calceoli. Female antenna 2 little longer than 1, peduncle strongly setose, flagellum about 8-articulate; male antenna 2 half body length, peduncle anterior margin setose, flagellum with calceoli. Gnathopod 1 and gnathopod 2 propodus oval, palm oblique, convex, delimited by triangular process and spine. Pereiopods 3 and 4 carpus oval with very long and robust distal spine. Pereiopod 5 basis broad; pereiopod 6 very elongate, almost twice length of pereiopod 7, basis broad with setose anterior margin; merus, carpus and propodus with few spines and long setae. Pereiopod 7 basis very expansive, margin finely serrate. Male uropod 3 rami about equal, margins with plumose setae; female uropod 3 inner ramus conical and scarcely half length of article 1 of outer ramus, outer margin of outer ramus with small groups of long setae. Telson moderately long, cleft almost to base, each lobe with 1 or 2 apical spinules.

Size:
Up to 4 mm.

Colour:
Whitish.

Habitat:
Often on mud or clay sediments. Depth range from 40 to 800 metres.

Distribution:
North Atlantic and Arctic Ocean; Greenland, Iceland, west coast of Norway, Shetlands, Isle of Man.
