Stenula rubrovittata

Description:
Epimeral plate 3 prolonged posteriorly, distal angle narrowly rounded. Eyes moderately large, rounded. Antenna 1 peduncle article 1 equal to articles 2 and 3 together, flagellum about 9-articulate. Antenna 2 slightly longer than antenna 1, peduncle articles 4 and 5 about equal in length, flagellum about 9-articulate. Antennae much longer in male than in female. Gnathopod 1 merus prolonged distally, finely setulose, merus and carpus spinose and setose, propodus oval, palmar margin and inner margin of the dactylus minutely toothed, palm delimited by one or two slender spines. Male gnathopod 2 and female carpus with a small spinose posterior lobe, propodus rectangular, palm oblique, convex, regularly toothed and with several small setae, delimited by a triangular process and one or two small spines. Pereiopod 7 basis broadly expanded, merus broad with a distal angle reaching to the end of the carpus. Uropod sparsely spinose; uropod 3 peduncle with a single apical spine but without marginal spines, articles of ramus about equal in length. Telson elongate oval, without marginal spines.

Size:
Up to about 5 mm.

Colour:
Whitish, with bright red transverse bands on the body and coxal plates.

Habitat:
Depth range from 5 to 600 metres. Typically found in association with hermit crab, Pagurus bernhardus , occasionally amongst algae or hydroids.

Distribution:
North-East Atlantic; North Sea, from northern Norway to the Bay of Biscay.
